The Swiss managed to knot the game at two when Andre Abegglen was able to put the ball past goalkeeper František Plánička. The Czechs finally won the game, 3–2, when Nejedlý was able to score the game-winner seven minutes from the end. The victory meant a spot in the semifinals and a date with Germany. The Italian team traveled to Florence to take on Spain in what would be one of the ugliest and roughest games of any World Cup.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1905, Stabile played for Huracan at the time of the inaugural World Cup but soon thereafter, like so many other top South Americans in the 1930s, he found the lure of money too great and joined Italian club, Genoa. He was proclaimed a hero after netting a hat trick in his debut against rival Bologna. Stabile moved to Napoli in 1935, before finishing his career in the French League with Red Star Paris a year later. Surprisingly, Stabile started the 1930 World Cup on the bench.
