It is thought that it is during this pre-departure period that migrant birds make the decision of whether to migrate and in which direction. Just what birds do at this time is unclear, but the primary importance of visual cues associated with detecting the position of the setting sun or the pattern of polarized light in the sky (which is a direct correlate of the sun's position) has been demonstrated (Able 1982; Able and Cherry 1986; Moore 1987).
Among these typically diurnal birds are found many species which, under certain circumstances, exhibit occasional nocturnal activity. Such activities fall under four main headings, the most prominent of which are night migration and night singing. These two behaviours often occur in the same species and it seems likely that the majority, if not all, of the occasional night singers are also night migrants, though the reverse of this relationship is certainly not true. There is also a group of birds which may feed after dusk, but their night foraging is not an exclusively nocturnal activity and so it is most appropriately considered as an occasional nocturnal activity.
