By Sara H. Lindheim

In the Heroides, the Roman poet Ovid wittily plucks fifteen deserted heroines from historic fantasy and literature and creates the fiction that every lady writes a letter to the hero who left her in the back of. yet in giving voice to those heroines, is Ovid writing like a girl, or writing "Woman" like a man?

Using feminist and psychoanalytic techniques to check the "female voice" within the Heroides, Sara H. Lindheim heavily reads those fictive letters within which the ladies likely inform their very own tales. She issues out that during Ovid’s verse epistles the entire girls signify themselves in a strikingly comparable and disjointed model. Lindheim turns to Lacanian conception of wish to clarify those curious and hauntingly repetitive representations of the heroines within the "female voice." Lindheim’s method illuminates what those poems demonstrate approximately either masculine and female structures of the feminine.

The letter appears to be a straightforward, unreconstructed medium revealing the authentic thoughts and emotions of the writer. In fact, here the aliquis tells his audience about the layout of the land, the positioning of important warriors, and the dragging of Hector's corpse (31-36). Once again, a man communicates most significantly through speech. Throughout the epistle Penelope reveals that she has granted primacy to the medium of oral discourse over the written word. No communication ensues; she acquires no new information about her husband based on responses generated by her Epistolary Narrative and Ovid's Heroines epistles.

By incorporating these words into his epistles alongside his own, the poet introduces a second speaker into the inherently monologic structure of the letter, striving thus to fashion the effect of dialogue. 3D Writing letters not only allows correspondents to imagine that they are engaging in dialogue but almost magically conjures up physical apparitions. A woman could not leave the house unless accompanied by a chaperone. She seldom was invited to dinner with her husband and lived in a segregated area of the house. She received no formal education: ‘Let a woman not develop her reason, for that would be a terrible thing,’ said the philosopher Democritus. Women were married when they reached puberty, often to men twice their age. Such a difference in age and maturity, as well as in education, would have enhanced the notion of women’s inferiority.

First mentioned by the fifth-century historian Herodotus (the ‘father’ of history), they were depicted as dwelling on the borderlands of civilization, devoted solely to warfare; they sought men only when they needed to mate, and exposed all their male babies, rearing only the females. They are the mirror image of patriarchal Athens. With the Amazons, the fantasy of the autonomous male meets its nightmare opposite, the autonomous female. Men’s fascination with warrior women has a long history, from Classical Athens to today’s comic book heroine Wonder Woman and professional women wrestlers.

24 In rebellion, the tragic heroines cross the boundary between what is acceptable female behaviour and what is not, thereby becoming masculine, even Amazon-like. ’25 The message is mixed, if not contradictory. While the playwrights often convey sympathy with women for the suffering and the oppression that goads them into rebellion, the resulting violence and savagery reinforces the underlying anxiety that women are wild and irrational creatures, eruptions of nature who are a threat to the civilized order created by men.

During the warming-pan scandal of 1688,8 when Queen Mary, upon giving birth to a catholic son who would succeed James on the throne, was accused of having had him smuggled into her bedchamber in a warming pan, these sentiments were given full expression. Designed to call into question the legitimacy of the catholic heir and thereby to justify the ouster of James from the throne, these misogynist rehearsals of feminine evil had the paradoxical effect of creating a situation in which women were recognized as having authority to determine the course of political life.

Crises of conscience compelled contemporaries to devise various stories to justify what was in fact the overthrowing of a legitimate monarch by his rightful subjects. Furthermore, all kinds of questions concerning the relationship of the monarchy to its ministers, to parliament, to political factions of court and country, and to the public arose, Restoring authority,1660-1715 37 as did those seeking to inquire into the nature of loyalty and virtuous citizenship. Because many of these problems could not be resolved by the law, they were often framed in terms of gender.

The New Model Army then turned its attention to parliament in December 1648, purging the House of Commons of its Presbyterian members, and leaving behind a “Rump” parliament of independents. That body tried Charles for treason in January 1649, and executed him on January 30. The Commons then abolished the monarchy, its prerogative courts, and the House of Lords, and set itself up as the “supreme authority of this nation, the representatives of the people in Parliament” under a commonwealth form of government.

Both Derrida' s binary and Grosz's rearrangement of the two terms are, in my view, expressions of social relations underlying the text. The dominance of mind is more than conceptual; it is a local achievement of people who are active in the social relations that rule; these relations are also those of the gender regime that women of my generation inherited. The very notion of turning toward the body as a philosopher's move is one that relies on a deep and foundational division that people are bringing into being daily in their local practices.

In a study that explored the relations of the work of mothering to schooling, Alison Griffith and I (Griffith and D. E. talked to each other about these a lot). We decided that we wanted to understand why we had the kinds of problems with the schools our children attended, problems that we associated with being seen by educators as defective parents of actually or potentially defective children. Over the period of two or three years before we decided to undertake the research, we shared confidences, complaints, miseries, and guilt arising from our relationships to our children's schools.

The governance of cities began to be transformed from forms of patronage to bureaucratic administrations. Public schooling came to be organized through the administrative apparatus of school districts and a professional educational staff of college- or university-trained teachers. Generally speaking, professions came into new prominence as a method of guaranteeing training, credentials, and standards of practice in the dispersed settings of professional practice (Collins 1979; Larson 1977; Noble 1977), a development of special importance in the geography of North America.

The village occupied a central place in Gandhi’s imagination as the locus of truth and freedom. The goal of swaraj, he emphasized, was the uplift and reconstruction of rural India, which remained uncolonized by the immoral forces of modernity. In a letter to Nehru, dated October 5, 1945, Gandhi wrote, “I am convinced that if India is to attain true freedom . . then sooner or later the fact must be recognised that people have to live in villages, not in towns, in huts, not in palaces. . ” (Gandhi 1997, 150).

Tentative and experimental . . [and] it is improbable that there can ever be only one path to empowerment” (Batliwala 1994, 67). Additionally, they stressed that empowerment must be an organic process undertaken with women, and not a blueprint strategy imposed on them or something handed to them. “We need to move away from any notion of empowerment, and perhaps even development, as something that can be done ‘to’ people or ‘for’ people” (Rowlands 1998, 30). These feminists thus raised the issue of the “how” of empowerment.

18 In “fic- The English Garden 37 tion,” in this very specific sense, our reason is unable to prove the objective reality of what it posits, but can only use what is posited regulatively for reflective judgment (KU 396). Kant gives, as an example of an ens rationis ratiocinantis, the notion of spirits that exist in the universe that think but have no bodies. The fiction we engage in if we try to think of such things (by taking away, in the spirit of Descartes, “everything material and yet suppos[ing] that it retains thought”), can never be established as objective reality (KU 468).

As soon as one attempts to make any claims about the whole, however, Kant maintains the absolute necessity of human cognition proceeding technically, making of nature an art in which organisms viewed purposively play a central part. Thus, although ultimately Kant’s conservatism and anthropocentrism will not allow him to transgress the boundaries of subjectivity understood as precise individuation, his critique of the science of his day would have a crucial influence on the Romantic and Idealist reconceptions of the organic understood as the relationship between humans and nature, and of Enlightenment descriptions of subjectivity.

Just as we cannot assign the purposiveness of nature an objective reality in analogy to art (as if God were a supreme craftsman with the intention of crafting the natural world), we also cannot assign it objective reality in analogy to the body of an organism.
