In the first place, he advocated a distribution of household tasks that would reflect democratic values: I think it plain that this voice of communities and ages, "Give us wealth, and the good household shall exist," is vicious, and leaves the whole difficulty untouched. Thus the family was unable to afford a level of domestic help adequate to relieve Stowe's heavy burdens. She bore several children within the space of a few years, including twin girls. Her time was fragmented between the necessities of child care and housework and the need to write in order to bring in extra money.
