Rainbow shots arc over the opponent's head to the deep line or crosscourt.  As you ascend to the descending ball, transfer your arms to a bow­and­arrow motion, drawing your hitting arm behind your head.  Follow through with your wrist over the top of the ball, giving it topspin to keep it diving down into the court.  Conversely, hitting the ball back to your left requires striking it at 1 or 2 o'clock.  Keep in mind also that you might have to get shots over 6­foot 6­inch blockers who can really jump—which requires your maximum jump and reach.

The straight­ahead pass rule is true for both the left and right sides.  If a server has beaten my partner and me two or three times in a particular zone, we will shade a foot in that direction.  It is imperative in every part of the sport, and especially in serve reception.  Success on the beach calls for constant talking between partners.  It also leaves you a long way from your attack at the net.  The target is your imaginary partner, so the pass should be hitting (or passing over) the target at chest level.

For example, knowing that her blocker is taking the line, a defender might start in the middle of the court, dart a few feet toward her blocker's line, then sprint to the crosscourt angle at the last second in hopes that the spiker doesn't see her.  In the end, you'll probably find your time is better spent working on other parts of your game.  That can make it hard on the hitter, who's been waiting and waiting and is now forced to try to change the attack at the last moment. After perfecting your hitting form, the next most important skill to develop is seeing the block.
