LEARN TO EVALUATE QUICKLY As a wildlife photographer you need to learn how to evaluate a scene very quickly. You often don’t have much time to plan and choose the framing of your shot so you need to be able to place all the pieces almost immediately. You need to be able to evaluate the light and make a quick adjustment in order to get the shot you are looking for. There are a few things you can do from the outset to help make this easier. 1 - Color of the surroundings Consider the colors you might be able to use in the area.

While you can add the same filters in processing it does not have the same effect on the image. This can help you make greens, reds, yellows and other contrast really explode out of your image. This type of filter usage is stylized and is something that needs to be looked at. It might be a good idea to use this on your backup camera in order to keep your primary camera catching the colors as they are. Primary color filters will dramatically add mood to your image, but use them wisely. Too much can look to fake.

In this situation (snow or ice), increase your expose by choosing a slightly slower shutter speed (1/100th sec >> 1/60th sec), or by opening your f-stop a little (F11 >> F8) to let in more light, against your cameras wishes. This will force a better exposure. Same goes with sandy beaches, as most beaches are silica, which is what makes up glass. -If the animal is in the shade you want to increase your exposure. -If the animal sits in open sunlight or a very brightly light area, decrease your exposure.
