Of youth who reported drug selling, 68% said they drank alcohol and 54% reported marijuana use. In contrast, among youth who said they had not sold drugs, 19% reported drinking alcohol and 6% reported using marijuana. Among those who sold drugs, both white and Hispanic youth were more likely than African Americans to also report alcohol use; white youth who sold drugs were also more likely than African Americans who sold drugs to report using marijuana.

During World War II, many communities used curfews as a method of control for parents busily engaged in the war effort. More recently curfew ordinances were commonly used by the police to disperse juveniles who are gathered in areas such as fast food stores and convenience-type grocery stores. S. 12 St. Louis, Missouri, established a juvenile curfew program, Nightwatch, to monitor juveniles on probation. The Nightwatch program monitors court-ordered curfew of juveniles on probation through random visits to their homes during curfew hours to check on their curfew compliance.
