Another way of ensuring that diaries provide slightly more structured data (but without restricting the student's potential to express other things that are important to him/her) is to involve the diary keeper in an ongoing dialogue with the teacher or a researcher. This allows the teacher or researcher to explore in greater depth any interesting data or patterns that are beginning to emerge. Diaries can also be used for very specific aspects of the learning over a period of time. For example, you could ask your students to keep a diary of how they revise or recycle their language learning over, say, three months.
