The king was busy in the preparations for his last and fi nal sacrifi cial ceremony. Bali saw this dwarf and greeted him with great hospitality, ‘O good Brahmin, what can I do for you? ’ Lord Vishnu was familiar with Bali’s generous nature. ’ So Vaman said, ‘I only wish for some land. ’ Bali at first could not believe the request and laughed. But he had vowed to give the Brahmin what he desired so he readily agreed. ‘Alright. ’ Declaring so, Bali offered water to the Brahmin before the latter took his first step.

Tulsi did not remember her birth as Vedavati. But she too was a pious devotee of Lord Vishnu. When Tulsi came of age, she commenced a penance in a forest to persuade Lord Vishnu to accept her as his wife. The divine sage, Narad Muni saw this from Heaven and came to Earth to give her advice, ‘Dear child. I know your heart’s desire. Pray to Lord Brahma instead. ’ Tulsi was very happy to hear this and began praying to Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma already knew who Tulsi really was and what she desired.

He knew about the demon’s boon so he took the form of a half-man, half-lion and went to challenge the arrogant demon king. In this form, Lord Vishnu came to be known as Narasimha. Narasimha’s rage was growing with each passing minute. When he met Hiranyakashipu, the latter was not worried. After all, he had his boon to protect him! Alas for the demon, he had forgotten his own request! He had said he did not want to be killed by man or animal. But Narasimha was a half-man and half-animal! Finally, when Hiranyakashipu was killed by Narasimha, it was the twilight hour—neither day nor night!
