Nonverbal clues are an important part of the information that people use to interpret and understand what is communicated. 15 E-mail is devoid of opportunities for obtaining this nonverbal information, of course. Another problem with all writing is that it requires a certain parsimony of words that in speech is not as constraining. It is not possible to communicate as much as we might want to about the context, things to watch out for, and so on in our e-mail and text messages. This is compounded by e-mail etiquette, which is to keep e-mail brief; many people already receive about thirty to sixty substantive e-mails daily.

Together with cognitive dissonance, we are almost certain likely to misread others’ intentions, purposes, and efforts. It seems that we are destined to misunderstand each other. The problem of communication is that, in the end, all communication is partial. Our words can only partially express what we mean and intend to express, and our listening is clouded by our frameworks and desire for feeling good. In addition, technology exacerbates the potential for misunderstanding.
