So when Marigold asked if they could study together for the wish-granting exam, she hesitated. “Puh-lease,” Marigold pleaded. ” “All right,” Rose said at last. She would just have to practice invisibility later. Marigold hugged Rose. ” The two fairies sat on the lawn to study. Marigold had trouble remembering the answers even to simple questions—like how many wishes humans could have—so Rose made up some rhymes to help her.
Stop! ” yelled Bink. The fairies took off after the hobgoblin. He tore through the cottage and out the front door. The fairies followed him outside but soon lost sight of him. Rose put her ear to the ground, listening. Sure enough, she could just make out the faint clatter of footsteps below. “He’s underneath us,” she said. ” Bink exclaimed. ” Rose wondered if Mistress Lily knew about the tunnels. ” asked Daisy. “At least a week,” said Bink. ” “He can’t be very comfortable living in an 55 old mine tunnel,” said Marigold.
Moonlight shone through the window and glinted off three sharp knives lying on the counter. Rose tried not to look at them. Instead, she focused on glowing embers in the fireplace and listened to the soft tick tock of the clock above the sink. After what seemed like hours (but was really only a few minutes), Rose began to feel sleepy. It didn’t help that Bink and Marigold kept yawning. Finally, Bink’s chin dropped to his chest, and he began to snore softly. “Wake up,” Rose whispered. She gently shook his shoulder.
