The finite element method in electromagnetics by Jian-Ming Jin

By Jian-Ming Jin

A brand new version of the prime textbook at the finite aspect procedure, incorporating significant developments and extra purposes within the box of electromagnetics

The finite aspect strategy (FEM) is a robust simulation approach used to resolve boundary-value difficulties in numerous engineering conditions. it's been time-honored for research of electromagnetic fields in antennas, radar scattering, RF and microwave engineering, high-speed/high-frequency circuits, instant conversation, electromagnetic compatibility, photonics, distant sensing, biomedical engineering, and area exploration.

The Finite aspect technique in Electromagnetics, 3rd version explains the method’s approaches and methods in cautious, meticulous prose and covers not just crucial finite point procedure thought, but additionally its newest advancements and applications—giving engineers a methodical technique to quick grasp this very robust numerical procedure for fixing functional, frequently advanced, electromagnetic problems.

Featuring over thirty percentage new fabric, the 3rd variation of this crucial and finished textual content now includes:

A wider diversity of functions, together with antennas, phased arrays, electrical machines, high-frequency circuits, and crystal photonics
The finite aspect research of wave propagation, scattering, and radiation in periodic structures
The time-domain finite aspect technique for research of wideband antennas and brief electromagnetic phenomena
Novel area decomposition options for parallel computation and effective simulation of large-scale difficulties, comparable to phased-array antennas and photonic crystals
Along with an outstanding many examples, The Finite point technique in Electromagnetics is a perfect booklet for engineering scholars in addition to for execs within the box.

Example text

Therefore, electromagnetic analysis plays an important role in scientific research and engineering design. The problem of electromagnetic analysis is actually a problem of solving a set of Maxwell’s equations subject to given boundary conditions. In this chapter we review briefly some basic concepts and equations of electromagnetic theory that are used frequently in this book. Our emphasis is on the presentation of various differential equations and boundary conditions that define boundary-value problems to be solved by finite element analysis.

Finally, an alternative formulation is presented so that the basic principle of the finite element method stands out more clearly. The finite element analysis of a general one-dimensional problem is described in Chapter 3. The result is then applied to the problem of plane wave reflection by a metal-backed dielectric slab, and also to the differential equation arising from the application of the on-surface radiation condition method to scattering by an impedance cylinder. The first problem illustrates the analysis on a straight line, and the second demonstrates the method’s capability in treating a curved line.
