It reveals that becoming a person is the same thing as becoming a person in relationship and in social context. 711 **With the exception of periodic generalization about primitive society and longer nursing periods. 5 The Relation to the Mother and the Mothering Relation The ideal mother has no interests o f her own.

16 These children may grow up without ego capacities sufficient to establish relationships, may not develop basic motor and verbal skills, may be psychotic, and, in extreme cases, die. to her that arejnternalized defensively; it is her care that must be con­ sistent and reliable; it is her absence that produces anxiety.
