I carry a minimalist wash kit if going away for anything longer than a day. A bar of non-perfumed soap, toothbrush and paste, anti-bacterial talc and a lightweight towel all squeeze into a small dry bag about the size of a tin of beans. Keep your soap in a little net bag: you can then hang it on a branch and use it through the mesh without having to take it out. Anti-bacterial talc is great for rubbing into soggy feet at the end of the day, and you will need a lightweight camping towel. Don’t forget a roll of toilet paper.
Simply tilt your mirror until it catches the sun and aim the reflected spot of light in the rough direction of whomever you need to signal to. An easy way to aim the light spot accurately is to hold your hand at arm’s length, obscuring the distant rescue team you need to signal to.
