Kickoff Coverage • Huddle • Squib • After 15-yard penalty • After safety • Onside (feet team) The thing we talk about is what happens when we kick off from the 45-yard line instead of the 30-yard line. We do not want to kick the ball through the end zone. We want to kick the ball high and drop it on the goal line. We want the high kick so we can cover deep and back up the offense. The feet team consists of the fast players. We want speed covering onside kicks. What we tell our players on a punt safe play is to cover to the sidelines.
Special Period In this drill, we work a kick blocking drill (Diagram #2). The kick blockers start out on a line with the ball in the middle of the line. The blockers want to get as close to the ball as they can without aligning offside. If the protection scheme is zone blocking, the defender attacks uphill. He does not attack to the inside. He wants the zone to spread to the outside and not contract to the inside. Diagram #2. Kick Block Drill In the zone blocking scheme, as the defender attacks outside, the blocker puts up his outside arm and tries to force the defender outside with his hand.
We have won 10 games in eight of the last 10 years. Four of the last five years, we have been to a BCS bowl. We have won big games to get to the big ball game.
