If you want to improve the quality of the pictures you either need to use a larger camera, or apply some of the following low-light techniques. Shooting in bright light is easy because the camera can simply use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action. Shooting in low light is very different because the camera needs to leave the shutter open for an extended period of time in order to gather enough light to form the picture. It’s very difficult to hold a camera completely still if the shutter is open for more than 1/40s.

The next picture is of a street café in downtown Vung Tau, Vietnam. I chose a shutter speed of 1/30s, as I wanted to capture the motion of the lady’s broom, but didn’t want the diners to be blurred. The following picture was taken on a busy side road, with lots of traffic and people, so I had to be quick. I knew I wouldn’t have time to steady the camera, so I dialled in the fastest shutter speed I thought I could get away with, without underexposing the picture (1/50s). When my camera’s in S-mode, the shutter speed is controlled by a small dial.
