The bodies of the dancers literally brush up against and collide with walls, floors and pavements of the city. Its architecture and buildings are clearly seen to contain, even to trap and impound the performers. In Step in Time Girls (1988), choreographed by Yolande Snaith and filmed by Terry Braun, three women from different periods; 'contemporary', 'wartime' and 'Victorian', are seen inhabiting and coming and going from the same London flat. Frustration with the environment and situation are evident when the women repeatedly rock back and forth in chairs, run and jump up against walls and windowsills and stride back and forth along table and windowsill.

Concern over the African origins and components of black diaspora cultures has recently re-emerged as a vital political issue.
