After the lunch I drove out to the coastal village which I will call Sandton where I was to learn that the lowest place is not entirely straightforward or without issues either. Under apartheid, Sandton was a ‘coloured’ area and the village reflects this history not only in its demography, but also in the legacy of drug-related crime and violence. When I had been there before to meet the priest, I will call him Andrew, the vicarage had just been burgled. This was a real shock because, together with several other incidents, it suggested that the traditional taboo protecting the clergy was dying, if not dead.
