And I had this couple—a dancer and a French singer who were game to play. I began by shooting them from outside the room, which helped them get comfortable. I had them start at opposite sides of the room with their eyes closed, hands out, moving slowly, trying to find each other. That was my only direction; the rest was up to them. When they finally touched, they started to dance. By the time I took the picture on the opposite page, I was very close. This sort of photo is a negotiation with the subjects, even though I usually don’t know where I’m trying to take the negotiation.

More interesting stuff is going on. That’s your job as a photographer—to shoot the world as it is. Remember that you have a story to tell and that the camera, honestly used, has a way of staring without being rude. That’s not to say that it doesn’t sometimes feel awkward (or, yes, rude) to pull out a camera, and there are times when it is just heartless to do so, but the real challenge is getting up the nerve to shoot when most people simply don’t.
